Top Luxury Cars | First Test: 2010 Audi R8 V-10

What's the difference in the V-10 engines that power the top Audi and Lamborghini's crown prince? As it turns out, not much. Both share the same basic components and architecture: a 90-degree V-angle, DOHC 4-valves per cylinder top end, mostly aluminum construction. The forged-steel crankshaft and connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons providing a 12.5:1 compression ratio are also shared by both sports cars.

According to Volkswagen AG's powertrain head Wolfgang Hatz and Audi's V-8 and V-10 chief Jurgen Jablonski, the differences are subtle and restricted to intake and exhaust details. Engine mapping-combinations of ignition timing, fuel delivery, valve timing, and operation of the muffler bypass valves-differs to give the Lamborghini engine a more urgent and aggressive personality versus the Audi's slightly steadier, more sedate characteristics. Minor differences in the shape of the intake ports and the configuration of the twin intake plenums topping each engine are also present. While exhaust headers are basically the same, the layout of the mufflers differs significantly according to the space available under each car and the auditory flavor desired by each brand.

Lamborghini chose an untamed in-your-face howl that starts early and lasts until the revs run out at 8700 rpm. Audi R8 engineers selected a deeper, less frenetic voice. Stand on the gas in the Gallardo and the V-10 overwhelms the cockpit with an Italian serenade. In the Audi, triggering the throttle hurtles you expeditiously away from a wake roiling with dust and commotion.

The stats tell the rest of the story. The Lamborghini engine tops at with 552 versus the R8's 525 horsepower at 8000 rpm. The more expensive Gallardo also tops Audi's torque with 398 lb-ft versus the R8's 391 lb-ft at 6500 rpm. While both cars are quick, R8 drivers will enjoy a clear view of a rapidly shrinking Gallardo's rear bumper when the green flag drops.

The 2007 Chevrolet Volt concept dazzled, even more than General Motors expected. For 2010 production, however, it has to use existing component sets, which naturally make the Volt more mainstream and cheaper to build. The changes also give the car lower drag, more cabin space, and a tighter turning circle. The designer of both vehicles, Bob Boniface, says that concept cars are "not a contract with the general public" and that the commercial product is a much better car. We tend to agree with him. Polarizing design can impress but lose sales. GM needs this car to succeed. So do we all.

From Concept to Production

1 The deeply inset grille and the sharp crease from the lower lamps were terrible for aerodynamics, and the recessed lamps were neither adequate for illumination nor legal.

2 Multiple hard surface-change lines on the front of the concept tended to confuse and retard oncoming air molecules. Smoothing the front end helps aerodynamically and simplifies production.

3 Saab 99-like, the tank-slit wraparound windshield was deemed likely to compete with plans for future Saab products. But GM may sell Saab anyway.

4 The sharp break from windshield to roof was likewise considered too Saab-like, and it was also aerodynamically undesirable, thus the change to uninterrupted flowing glass.

5 Big bulges for oversize - 21-inch - wheels were another drag-increasing styling element that had to go for the production car.

6 The grille shape was retained, but air flows into the engine compartment only through peripheral slots around the grille shield, which retains its diamond texture. Most air enters below the bumper.

7 Headlamps had to be bigger for adequate lighting, and wrapping them around the front end let side markers be incorporated.

8 The impossible-to-clean transparent fairings from the show car have been replaced by painted sheetmetal, which visually extends the height of the side glass.

9 These 17-inch wheels look much like the show car's 21-inch units, but in fact, they have been refined to reduce aerodynamic drag. Small details count when there's not much power available.

10 The continuous sweep of glass from windshield to roof is excellent for aerodynamic drag reduction, but it also gives the car a softer, safer appearance, desirable for a family car.

Recession or not, here I come!

Just like you, we always want to know what's coming next from Detroit, Tokyo, Stuttgart, Munich, Los Angeles, and all the other places where automotive engineers and designers dream and scheme on our behalf. Car companies, of course, are loath to share information on new products lest their competitors try to copy them--or you decide not to buy the cars they already have on dealer lots. Car companies, though, are simply groups of people, and some of them have a hard time keeping secrets. So, we poke, we prod, we cajole, and we uncover information that becomes the basis for our annual Sneak Preview issue. As always, some of our information is educated guesswork based on hints, insinuations, hunches. Make no mistake, though, these cars are on their way, even though details may change. Ladies and gentlemen: our list of 136 cars coming over the next few years Did you think that the worldwide economic meltdown meant that Toyota was canceling its long-planned LF-A supercar project? Think again. The LF-A is a pet project of new chief Akio Toyoda and therefore remains very much on track. In fact, we'll finally see the production-spec car at the Tokyo Motor Show this October, and the V-10-engined coupe will go on sale late in 2010. With the car's development costs ballooning way beyond initial estimates due to increased use of carbon fiber and other exotic materials, a very limited production run is planned. After the LF-A is introduced, the company will take orders for about a year, deliver a predetermined number of cars (fewer than 1000 units is a good guess), and then cease production, going out on a high note. How much money are we talking? Well over $300,000, which puts the LF-A firmly in Ferrari 599GTB Fiorano and Lamborghini Murciélago territory.

Actual performance statistics remain murky at this point, but we know that the LF-A will look essentially like the front-engine concept from the 2007 Detroit auto show, and it will be powered by a V-10 making in excess of 500 hp.

Ironically, it's only years after the big divorce that the Jeep brand finally benefits from the DaimlerChrysler marriage. An all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee debuts for 2011, and it now shares its underpinnings with the Mercedes-Benz M-class SUV. Better late than never, we suppose.

A new 3.6-liter replaces the previous 3.7-liter as the base V-6. It produces 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (up significantly from the old lump's 210 and 235) and returns 11 percent better fuel economy, thanks in part to variable valve timing. The optional 360-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 returns to the playground, and both engines are paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive.

An optional Quadra-Lift air suspension (inherited from Mercedes) can raise the Grand Cherokee's ride height, increasing approach, departure, and breakover angles for even more off-road credibility. No longer constrained by the Commander, Jeep's mainstay family hauler has room to grow - and so the new Grand Cherokee is 1.8 inches longer, 3 inches wider, and, most important, rides on a wheelbase that's 5.3 inches longer. That last measurement contributes to a significant increase in rear-seat room, a welcome improvement over today's cramped bench. Jeep promises more soft-touch plastics and a higher quality interior, as well as an available Alpine sound system.

STAYIN' ALIVE, AT LEAST IN SOME FORM: The Grand Cherokee's styling is purely evolutionary, but Chrysler knows not to mess with a good thing - as the company faces extinction, it's Jeep that's most likely to survive.

Land Rover is today unveiling a family of gently chiselled full-size 4x4s – think of it as Solihull’s answer to the changing zeitgeist and the next step in Land Rover’s greening of its range. The new Discovery gains a clean new diesel and can now claim a 30mpg average; there’s also a new interior and an exterior facelift – enough to warrant a new Discovery 4 badge.

The big news under the bonnet of Discovery 4 is the arrival of the new Jaguar Land Rover 3.0-litre V6 diesel. It’s an evolution of the current 2.7 TDV6 (which continues for base-end versions) and is equipped with the very latest in common-rail technology and a particulate filter to trim emissions to 244g/km, meet EU5 exhuast limits not due in until 2011, and hit an average of 30.4mpg.
So the new Land Rover Discovery 4 is a tad cleaner… hardly an eco saint though!

True, but the Discovery 4 gobbles around 10% less fuel than before; remember these 4x4 behemoths weigh in at a sturdy 2.7 tonnes or so. That kerbweight hasn’t really been addressed in this facelift – lighter weight Land Rovers won’t arrive until the next generation of all-new models arrive in the next decade, utilising lighter weight construction methods.

Only the two turbodiesels will be sold in the UK, although overseas markets will be offered the new naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8. The 3.0 TDV6 offers an impressive range of talents, with 29% more power (242bhp) and 36% more torque (443lb ft) than the breathless 2.7. That’ll be why it chops a quarter off its 0-60mph time, now achieved in 9.0sec.

It’s a new Land Rover. Guess it’ll go off road?

You bet. The Terrain Response system is updated with a new soft-sand setting. Perfect if you happen to live near a desert or are a part-time lifeguard. A new rock crawl setting is added (handy for any lizards out there), while the stability systems are retuned to hold the car on hills. But there wasn’t much wrong with the Disco’s off-road mud-slinging antics – and we’re sure the new one will keep the standard high.

Land Rover is claiming better on-road dynamics for Disco 4; new suspension knuckles, bushes and dampers are fitted to reduce the roll centre and a recalibrated steering rack is used. We’re driving the new models in summer 2009, so we’ll soon know for sure.
How will I notice the new Land Rover Discovery 4 on the road?

Quite an easy facelift to spot, this one. The front end adopts a more Range Rover style with a hexagonal-patterned twin-bar grille and LED-trimmed lights front and rear, there are body-coloured door mirrors (at last!), and the interior gains a serious makeover with an all-new cabin sporting a noticeably improved material quality. It’s seriously comfy in here: the Disco still seats three rows of seven adults in genuine comfort – not bad considering it has a smaller footprint than a Jaguar XF or Mercedes E-class.

Being a mid-life facelift, Land Rover has added a smattering of new tech too: there’s a 360deg camera system to avoid kerbs and rocks off-road, a hill holder, a system to guide you to your towing trailer, auto-dipping headlamps and keyless entry. All of this enabled by a new electrical architecture shared on all three new large Land Rovers (improved e-reliability is one claimed advantage).

The new Discovery 4 arrives in showrooms in September 2009. Don’t expect prices to change much from today’s levels. There’s little to criticise in the tech update, but are we alone in missing the architectural purity of the outgoing Disco? Design director Gerry McGovern admits Discovery 3 is too brutal for some markets and he’s had to tone it down. So there has been plenty of work to minimise the visual mass of this car, although the actual dimensions tell another story.

Rome or Bust: We flog the new Lotus Evora from England to Rome and back.

For as long as most folks at Lotus Cars in Hethel, England, can remember, most everyone has eaten lunch in the office, worked eight-and-a-half hours Monday through Thursday, and then taken off the rest of the day at noon on Friday.

So a weekend at Lotus works out to two-and-a-half days. In the late ’80s, the company’s CEO, Michael Kimberley, suggested to his engineers a new approach for putting miles on Elan prototypes: Leave Hethel at noon and drive to Rome and back, a 2500-mile jaunt. Just be back in your cubicle on Monday morning with a picture of the car at the Colosseum.

Even Lotus’s devoted, monk-like engineers weren’t thrilled with the idea of living in an Elan for two days. The trips were not without setbacks: Once an Elan prototype’s exhaust snapped in half near Lyon, in France. The Lotus suffered the indignity of limping into a Renault repair garage, exhaust dragging and engine blaring. Then the Hethel crew, which spoke no French, had to mime the problem to the perplexed French repairman. Hours later, after an exchange of francs and Lotus-branded pens and key chains, they were back on the road, the exhaust system welded back together.

A new Lotus model is rare—about as rare as using the words “practical, refined, reliable, and comfortable” to describe the car without the prefixes “im” and “un” in place. For more than 50 years, Lotus’s cars have pushed intoxicating levels of performance and handling, but a general lack of practicality, refinement, reliability, and comfort often left owners feeling exhausted and hung over.

The new Evora held the promise of being different, modern. The idea was to maintain the rabid Lotus-grade handling and performance but throw in a livable interior, a back seat, more room, and the sort of civility that might appeal to Porsche drivers. So how, we wondered, would this new Lotus fare at continually high speeds all the way to Rome and back? Could a Lotus actually be comfortable over 2500 miles? Or would it revert to its old tricks—shedding parts, splitting exhausts, or worse, quitting entirely and forcing us to hitchhike home? We figured we should bring along some Lotus pens just in case.

After a red-eye from Detroit to London and a two-and-a-half-hour, 136-mile trip by car northeast to rural Hethel in Norfolk, I arrive at the gates of the former U.S. Air Force base that frugal Lotus founder Colin Chapman, now long departed, turned into company headquarters in 1966.

And there’s my Evora, sitting silently in a steady rain. This new model is a stylistic departure from the Elise and the Exige—it’s more maturely penned, looking very unlike a wheeled water bug. Like the Elise and the Exige, the Evora sits low, the front of the car barely at shin height, the tops of the front fenders about knee-high.

Getting in doesn’t require the Cirque du Soleil training that the Elise and the Exige do, but slipping between the wide side sills and the steering wheel remains more challenging than getting into any Porsche. There are still some dollar-store touches inside: cheap-looking window switches, the Ford-sourced turn-signal and wiper stalks. But overall, the interior has a style and quality that wouldn’t look out of place in an Audi.

Firm and snug Recaro seats and a tilting and telescoping wheel adjust easily for a comfortable driving position. Looking out, the huge windshield seems to end at your feet; the view ahead is panoramic, interrupted only by the tops of the front fenders, which serve as reference points. When seated on the wrong side of a car and driving on the wrong side of the road—all the while circling London’s Heathrow Airport waiting for a photographer—it’s always useful to know where the front of the car is.

Lensman Tom Salt arrives, and I’m stunned by the amount of gear he has brought along. Kim Kardashian probably packs lighter. The Evora’s six-cubic-foot trunk verges on useless, so we just cram our gear into the 23-cubic-foot back seat. Lotus claims the rear seat is usable by a fifth-percentile female, which basically means that if you’re over five feet tall, riding back there is only slightly better than being waterboarded.

We head into London, just in time for the stress of rush hour. We’re looking for backdrops to prove we’ve been here, so we aim toward Big Ben. That taken care of, we drive southeast out of London, then crawl in traffic for a few hours, and—finally—we sweep onto the M20, which looks like freeways do everywhere else. Fifty uneventful miles later, we tool into Folkestone and the entrance to the great tunnel built under the English Channel. Beyond it is France.

Lexus calls the GS 450h a “no compromises hybrid,” and it’s easy to understand why. It offers the power of a V8 with the fuel-efficiency of a V6, and the kind of opulent cabin that Lexus is known for. It is a tight fit for taller drivers, however, and still trails the best sport sedans in handling.

When most car shoppers think of hybrids, they picture oddly-shaped, smaller hatchbacks with lackluster performance but great fuel economy. That’s Toyota’s fault – the Prius set the mold. The luxury division of Toyota, however, has broken that same mold with several quick, luxurious hybrids that don’t trade away much of anything in pursuit of fuel-efficiency. The Lexus GS 450h, like the larger LS600h, is among the most fuel-efficient cars in its class, but it doesn’t offer the kind of sky-high fuel economy numbers you’ll see on the window sticker of a Prius or a Lexus HS250h.

Instead, the GS Hybrid offers performance that competes with luxury sport sedans, a sumptuous passenger cabin, stylish bodywork and excellent safety ratings.

It can’t hang with the most performance-focused large luxury cars on a winding road. Reviewers say the steering of the GS Hybrid is too light, leaving the driver detached from road feel. It also won’t suit taller owners.

Other Cars to Consider

Several reviewers have noted that the GS line of cars, including this hybrid version, aren't comfortable for drivers much over six feet tall. Those drivers might want to test drive an Infiniti M or Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan instead. Headroom is tight at all four seating positions in the GS hybrid. And while neither of those cars is available in a gas-electric version this year, both automakers have hybrid editions in the pipeline, which may reach showrooms as early as the 2011 model year.

Lexus GS Hybrid: The Details

The GS 450 Hybrid comes in only one trim level. Its equipment list is close to comprehensive, but a handful of upgrades are offered. For 2010, the GS hybrid gets a slightly modified grille, standard 18-inch wheels and a new power rear sunshade.

The 2010 Acura RL doesn't carry the same cachet as some more well-known luxury cars, but it's an excellent choice for many buyers. With outstanding cabin electronics, bulletproof Honda reliability and resale value, and a price that doesn't climb high when you start adding options, it's a great value. But some reviewers say it is underpowered for its price, and short on space for its size.

While most large luxury cars offer just slightly different takes on the same high-power formula, the Acura RL is a little different. There is no supercharged V8 offered here. That's not to say the RL isn't sporty - its unique SH-AWD system (that's "Super Handling - All Wheel Drive") means it holds a precise line in a hard corner - but the RL is more about agility than speed, and more about high-tech digital luxury than old world leather-and-wood elegance.

The RL's 3.7-liter V6 is nothing you'd find in a more affordable car. It makes a V8-like 300 horsepower. But it can be a beat slower than many V8-powered cars, and reviewers are disappointed with the car's 16/22 mpg EPA rating -- the RL actually ranks in the bottom half of its class for fuel economy even though uses two fewer cylinders than most of its rivals. That SH-AWD system, however, makes it fun to drive. The system actually helps to steer the car, varying the speed of each wheel independently to point the car into turns while maintaining excellent grip. It gives the car an entertaining personality on a winding road.
Other Cars to Consider

But those truly looking for an athletic large sedan will want to try out the superbly balanced BMW 5-Series, or perhaps the muscular Jaguar XF.

Those cars, however, might not be the RL's most direct rivals. If the RL interests you, there's another car you should consider before laying money down. The RL's smaller sibling, the Acura TL, is worth a look. It isn't much smaller, and the two cars share so many mechanical components that buyers might find the TL essentially offers the RL experience at a discounted price.
Acura RL: The Details

The RL is offered in just one trim level for 2010, an available Technology Package adds a voice-controlled navigation system with traffic and weather updates that, some reviewers say, is the best one found anywhere. A Technology Package with Collision Mitigating Braking System increases the safety quotient.

The 2010 Infiniti M ranks 2 out of 13 Luxury Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 55 published reviews and test drives of the Infiniti M, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Sold as the V6-powered M35 and the V8-powered M45, Infiniti’s top-of-the-line sedan is a high-performance machine. It doesn’t sell as well as some better-known rivals, but some in the automotive press aren’t sure why. It’s a well-rounded sport sedan, though it may ride too firm for some.

Car and Driver sums up the typical opinion of the automotive press perfectly when it says, “Infiniti's M sedans offer excellent value, space, luxury, and performance--it's too bad more folks don't notice."

The M35 and M45 sedan are not often mentioned in the same breath as some of the better-known large luxury sport sedans. But many reviewers think they should be. Infiniti’s flagship sedan offers a stylish cabin with an appealing modern design theme and exceptionally comfortable seats, and the ability to corner with some of the best sport sedans on the market. It can’t match the raw engine power of a Jaguar XF, but reviewers say its handling balance rivals anything else in the class – which may be more important than horsepower to those looking to have some fun on a routine drive.
Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Infiniti M's sporty character might be too much for some. Those looking for a comfortable commuter might be better suited by a Lexus GS or Acura RL. The M doesn’t insulate its driver from the road like those cars – it engages the driver in the drive, much like the BMW. M sedans equipped with the Sport package are particularly stiff – stiff enough to turn off some reviewers who like the sporty nature of the standard car.

Those considering the M precisely because of its sporty nature might want to test drive the BMW 5-Series, the large-sedan cornering champion, or the powerful XF before buying.
Infiniti M: The Details

The M comes as either the M35, with a six-cylinder engine or the M45, with an eight-cylinder engine. Both models are available in a base rear-wheel drive, a Sport edition with a firmer, sport-tuned suspension and a revised front fascia, and an X edition with all-wheel drive.

The M was first offered in the 2005 model year, and has changed little since then. It is due for a complete redesign for the 2011 model year, so those who can afford to wait might find a better deal on the 2010 M once the 2011 has begun rolling into dealerships.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class held the top spot in our Luxury Large Car rankings for most of 2008 and 2009, but Mercedes has improved it anyway. Entirely redesigned for 2010, the new E-Class has a new sense of style inside and out. It features more athletic road manners than the car it replaces and, incredibly, a lower price. The new E-Class is a must-see for every luxury large car shopper.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class doesn’t make any sense.

It’s a better car than the 2009 E-Class. It has an eye-catching look that’s best seen in person, an opulent interior with an old-world panache that other luxury cars can’t match, a newfound sporty character and a list of safety equipment that boggles the mind. Yet it’s cheaper than the car it replaces. Mercedes improved the E-Class drastically for 2010, then cut its price. A seasoned auto critic with the New York Times writes, “I can’t recall a price cut of this magnitude -- nearly 9 percent -- on any recent car, let alone one that’s been fully redesigned.”

The new car is less-expensive than the old one, but it isn’t cheaply made. The Times continues, “Not only is there no evidence of cost-cutting, but in terms of interior luxury, the E-Class actually moves closer to the flagship S-Class sedan.”
Other Cars to Consider

Still, the Benz won’t be the perfect car for every luxury large car shopper. The BMW 5-Series and Audi A6 are better handlers -- but the E-Class has narrowed the gap, and is now nearly as poised as those cars.

But there may not be a large sedan with a better balance of luxury, style and performance than this one.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan: The Details

Safety-conscious shoppers, in particular, should explore the E-Class. It offers all of the typical safety equipment luxury buyers are accustomed to, but also has a new bag of tricks that no competitor can match, including an Attention Assist system designed to help drowsy drivers stay alert, and a system that automatically dims the highbeam headlights to avoid blinding oncoming cars. It’s enough to make the Volvo S80 duck in shame.

The E-Class is also offered in a coupe body style, but shoppers shouldn’t consider the two interchangeable. The E coupe has the same engine and transmission choices as this car, but it’s built on the C-Class chassis, which gives it very different handling dynamics and interior proportions.

All in all, Mitsubishi Lancer GS3 1.8 is the cheapest Lancer Sportback with standard climate control and curtain airbags. Both are hugely very welcome in something that could well be in a family car, and that makes this one of favorite versions of Mitsubishi Lancer Evo .

However, it isn't as 'cash guzzling' as you might think, you can get around 200 miles out of one tank of petrol, which isn't too bad, and you can rest assured that the rev-hungry Toyota engine is reliable.

One of my favourite places to drive is in the south-west of England, particularly Devon and Dorset where the roads are clear of traffic and the views are simply stunning. Maybe one day I'll drive my new Lotus Exige S in Dorset, but for now I'll have to stick with my trusty Ford Fiesta.

It's spacious, elegant and cuts a dash wherever you choose to take it, so whether you're heading into town or travelling on the motorway you can be assured of a fabulous performance.

The summer has been all the more enjoyable since I got my used Saab. It's simply one of the most gorgeous cars that I've ever had, and I would recommend a used Saab model to anyone!

This week I officially turned into a grumpy old man. Walking through town on my lunch break I was constantly surrounded by over excitable children, getting more rambunctious by the second thanks to an inordinate amount of e colorings in their bags of sweets. "Why aren't you in school?" I screamed to myself, before the realization that it was summer holiday time again hit me like a punch in the face. Then I remembered that if it was summer holiday time, it meant school reports had just been issued by their teachers who most probably drive used beige Volvos and wear corduroy trousers.

Therefore they had good reason to go crazy. If they are anything like I was, the lead up to the end of year school report was so nerve wracking I'd swear every year I'd developed Parkinson's disease overnight. I'd often stare in the mirror and vow to try harder next year. I'd even beg the teachers to go easy, promising all manner of riches I could never really lay claim to. The fear and anticipation was often far worse than the reality, but as a chatty child who was constantly being sent out of class for distracting others, there was always mention that "if Mark applied himself he could be a high achiever".

Obviously it could have been far worse: "Mark really should stop beating his teachers around the face" or, "Mark claims not to have burnt down the school, but the can of petrol in his bag says otherwise", but being an only child, anything less than perfect wasn't worth reading by my parents. My defense is that in many subjects I really wasn't interested in learning information I knew I'd never use in later life and therefore not learning the subject seemed a far more attractive proposition.

I think everyone is guilty of this. If you don't have a natural flair for something, or fail to enjoy an activity immensely, you'll spend as little time on the subject as possible. That is why I spent roughly two months on my art project and five minutes revising French. I can think of no better example of the correlation of being interested in something and therefore being good at it than driving.

I am yet to see a man who chats about the torque steer at 4,000rpm in his Lancer Evolution X reverse into a shopping trolley. Nor have I seen a girl racer in a heavily modified and much loved Honda Civic plow through the central reservation on a motorway. The reason is that these drivers love being behind the wheel, take great pride in choosing what car gets them from a to b, and throw boring things like fuel economy and practicality out the window.

Compare this to drivers of cheap and/or unstylish cars. How often do you see Kias, Protons and Chevrolets (formally Daewoo of course) in hedges, with gears crunching and more dents than a boxer's forehead? Often is my answer and it's because the drivers have no interest in cars and are therefore rubbish at driving, just like me and the French language.

Historically, Volvos have always been driven by the inept. Despite no styling whatsoever, old Volvos were so safe in a crash that all the rubbish drivers bought one so they knew they'd be OK when the inevitable happened. Yet something has happened in Stockholm. They've made a Volvo that is quite simply stunning to look at - the C30.

The Swedish firm have somehow managed to combine traditional traits like the rectangular front grill and long bonnet with a bonkers rear end that oozes Italian flair and a side profile that looks aggressive and unlike anything Volvo has done previously. It's not all show and no go however. To drive the C30 holds the road ably and provides plenty of feedback through the steering wheel. Engine choices vary, with the top-of-the-range one being the six-speed, 2.5 liter 220 PS turbo T5, which will propel you from standing to 60mph in just 6.3 seconds. It'll roar onto 150mph too.

Where Volvo has been sensible however is their pricing of the C30. The headlining T5 mentioned above is £21,495, however the most popular is likely to be the 1.6 litre petrol version which starts from just £14,750. The car has been on sale for nearly two years so used Volvos should start to appear on forecourts. It's too early to tell the rate of depreciation, but I reckon and will be mouth-wateringly tempting to give the Swede a chance.

Buying the New Volvo C30 will scream to the world one thing - you're not a rubbish driver.

When Maruti Suzuki launched the premium hatchback Ritz in May this year it made a huge splash in Hyundai plans. The Maruti officials openly claimed that Ritz will eat into the market share of Hyundai i10 at the base and the high end Hyundai i20. They also claimed that Mariti Ritz was better than Hyundai i10 in many ways and hence was a better buy. Hyundai officials rushed to clarify this point and let their actions speak louder than words.

The result was Hyundai sells at least 8,000 units of the i10 on an average every month. Indian small car market leader could not let such a market slip away form its finger. It launched Maruti A-star which was designed to rival the base versions of the Hyundai i10 while the Maruti Suzuki Ritz was meant to bit the share from the top end version. But Hyundai i10 has stood its ground and continues to pack all other hatchbacks to the lower ranks.

Let us take a compare the two cars Hyundai i10 and the Maruti Suzuki Ritz for what they stand.

On the performance, Hyundai i10 comes with two types of powertrains including Kappa engines and Ritz is powered by the new K12M engines. The smaller capacity 1.1Litre engines borrowed from Santro is a very capable power source. The other 1.2Litre Kappa engine is brilliant in performance and fuel economy. It delivers healthy 78.8 bhp while the Ritz with 1.2 Litre engine generates 84 bhp. Both engines offer a peak torque of 11.4 Kgm. When one compares the power to weight and torque to weight parameters, the Ritz is a big loser. The heavy body construction adds a full 170 kgs over what the i10 weights. This means the Hyundai i10 will offer quicker acceleration and sharp curves. Even when the cars are compared during the 0-60 km/h clock- the Hyundai i10 lands a few seconds earlier than Ritz. The Hyundai i10 surges comfortably ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Ritz.

On the ride and handling front, Ritz scores higher points than the i10. Built on the legendary Swift hatchback platform, Maruti Suzuki Ritz sports a taller roofline, a wider front end and a heavy rear end which helps balance the car during sharp curves. Ritz is a notch better than the i10 on agile handling parameter. The steering wheel in the Ritz offers good feel of the road and allows driver to feel in control of the vehicle. But drivers who believe that they have to zip through traffic like a cheetah, should go for the i10 as it is more agile owing it its lighter weight. At high speeds both cars display awesome stability.

On the design and interiors, Maruti Suzuki Ritz is more likely to rival the Hyundai i20. The tall and bulkier Ritz, comes with larger headlamps and wider front end, which translates to an attention grabbing exterior style. It has an utilitarian appeal complete with all the Maruti Suzuki design cues. The Hyundai i10 has a more contemporary design with pear drop shaped headlamps and grille that exudes power. It has the radical styling (like the swift) which will change the way hatches will look in the near future.

The interiors in Maruti Suzuki Ritz are spacious like the Swift. There is a tachometer integrated into the dashboard and twin dial instrument cluster is visually pleasing. Due to its tall roofline it offers an airy headroom which can accommodate adults over 6 ft tall. The rear seats offer a spacious legroom. The Hyundai i10 sports a modern feel. The controls on the dash are logically placed. The fine quality of the materials and the clean blend of dual of equipments and styles gives a feel of an upscale car. The in-car entertainment is on of the best in its class. The visibility from the driver's seat is excellent as the driver get a full forward view. The rear seat can be slightly cramped for large adults.

Aston Martin was initially questioned about the engine. Some thought it was the product of Ford. It was felt that the company had combined two Ford Duratec three litre engines. This proved to be incorrect, although there were some parts of that engine that were used. The 5.9 litre V12 engine, 460bhp that made up the Vanquish was definitely created differently from the Duratec.

Problems did plague the first versions of the Vanquish. The primary concerns were of the paddle shift manual gearbox and the handling of the vehicle. There was a comparison to the gearbox on the Ferrari which was extremely flawless when shifting. The performance of the Vanquish under original conditions was fine, but when the car was pushed hard the gearbox failed.

Aston Martin didn't work on the gearbox problem until the Ultimate Edition Vanquish that was produced in 2007. There were a total of forty cars in this line that finally resolved the paddle shift manual gearbox issue. In fact the company was so pleased with the new conventional manual stick shift gearbox they were willing to install them into previous Vanquish models.

While the Vanquish may have had some issues in the early days it was still a very popular vehicle. The dominance of the automobile on the road showcased the familiar Aston Martin trademarks. They began with the extended bonnet, which lead the eye to the unmistakeable front grille and the xenon headlights. The wheel arches protruded boldly and the side strakes completed the Aston Martin design.

The Vanquish S of 2005 was another effort to reduce disapproval. The S series has 520 horse power. It can reach 240 miles per hour, and go from a resting state to 60mph in 4.7 seconds.

The S series has a "Sports Dynamic Pack" on all models, rather than an extra component. The pack is designed to increase performance of steering, braking, and manoeuvrability.

In 2007 the Aston Martin Vanquish was discontinued and it was replaced with the new DBS model that was based around the more modern and highly acclaimed DB9. In 2010, Aston is rumoured to be releasing a proper Vanquish replacement, however as production has now moved to Gayden in Warwickshire it is unlikely to recreate the hand built construction of the stunning but flawed Vanquish.

We can add parts such as larger calipers, better wheels with bead locks, we can add bed covers, BAK is the supplying vendor for bed covers for the factory F150's have bed covers that will fit. there are lots of parts that can be used to personalize your new F150 Raptor. Though there not allot of parts manufactures working on performance parts up grades for the Raptor due to the cost of R&D and the decline in truck sales. But I would bet you that when this Raptor hits the market there will be a great deal of catching up to do.

I've talked to Rousch Performance engineers about this very thing, Rousch is holding back because Ford made some major changes in the Raptor engine management and there currant performance parts and goodies will not work for the Raptor so its a ground up situation for there parts as well. I'm sure they will attack this with all they have once the truck is available. There is one company that is in the position to supply a performance parts upgrade that will add approx. 150 hp to the Raptor right out of the box and we will be selling that Raptor system at about the same time the truck will be available. Raptor suspension is another area that has limited upgrades. As of yet there are no companies with lift kits on the drawing board reason being Ford has major changes to the suspension and they are waiting to get there hands on the new Raptor, Shocks are an area hard pressed to see up grades, talking to Ross the lead engineer at FOX racing there are no upgrades that are being looked at because Ross designed the system that ran in the BAJA and the Raptor already has the best, maybe later we will see something. He did say that FOX has a new Raptor Style shock upgrade for the standard F150's that will up grade the F150's to a Raptor style ride, we will have that soon.

Another area that we have looked at for upgrade is the cast lower front control arms, we have a major player in upscale buggy parts manufacturing that says they can produce billet lower control arms, we will continue to work on that and keep you advised.

I saw a Ralliart model that knocked my socks off, and after a few days of deliberation I decided to take the plunge and go for a test drive (I'm that sensible at least). It was an instant infatuation, and as I don't have to worry about accommodating a family it was the perfect choice for my personal situation.

I part exchanged my old super-mini, and the already attractive price was made even better by handing over the keys to my old car. Whilst it may not be ideal for everyone, the new Mitsubishi Colt really may well be the most super super-mini that I've driven to date. Whether I'm shopping, commuting to work or visiting far-flung friends, the Colt is an eager thoroughbred that never fails to deliver.

If you're looking for a new super-mini I highly recommend the Mitsubishi Colt, and you won't even need to check its teeth.

New engines, a whole bunch of new tech features, and a heavily facelifted appearance make for an interesting entry in the large luxury car segment. This particular category in the automobile world is extremely competitive, with BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Audi and Infiniti constantly trying to one-up each other.

Each of the players has some tech feature innovation under its belt, like automatic parking from Lexus, lane departure warning from Infiniti and night vision from Mercedes. However, 2009's cars all have these features, and more.

It's expected that a car in this segment will have gobs of power and acceleration times previously reserved for purebred sports cars, and even the lower of the two 7-series for 2009, the 750i can go 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Handling has always set BMW apart, as with their other cars, they're able to marry ride and handling like no other brand, but unfortunately, their lead in this segment is not by all that much.

The 750i's engine is a twin-turbo V8, which BMW uses purportedly for fuel economy purposes. In real-life driving, we did actually notice a difference, getting almost 19 mpg combined, vs. 16-17 for the previous naturally-aspirated engine. It's definitely not wanting for power, especially in this type of vehicle, but I'm a little disappointed at BMW's engine sounds post-2003. They've switched up the technology a little, and while the engines are smooth and powerful, they don't sound as good as older BMW engines.

BMW has shifted its focus away a little, as they used to focus on simply well-engineered great-driving vehicles. Steering feel and engine sound used to be more important to them than it is today, but today, BMW's sales have really grown and BMW has to compete with the likes of Lexus, Audi and Infiniti.

Considering everything, the BMW is still the most fun-to-drive sedan of the group it competes in, and for that, it definitely is attractive. Interior design is also excellent, and it doesn't give up anything to the Japanese in technology either, although reliability/longevity is another thing. Still, it does a whole lot of things very well and is a solid choice - do check it out if you're looking in the segment.

That may have been true some years ago, but it could not be further from the truth today. Both Ford and GM have become quality and fuel economy leaders in the last few years, especially from the highly competitive mid-size segment up. Chrysler still trails in both but is working hard and fast to catch up. Don't believe us? Check the numbers.

The EPA estimates for the ultra-fine new Fusion and Milan Hybrids are an impressive 41 mpg city and 36 highway, which beats Toyota's '09 mid-size Camry Hybrid by eight and two mpg, respectively. They are, Ford says, the most fuel-efficient midsized sedans in America.

The conventional Fusion and Milan, nicely restyled and much improved for 2010, offer the mid-size segment's best gasoline four-cylinder fuel economy, more powerful available V-6s, class-exclusive technologies, including blind spot detection and warning with cross traffic alert and Ford SYNC, and more total passenger and luggage capacity than the Camry. The Fusion's new look is more upscale, sportier and aerodynamically slicker. But the most exciting news is this all-new Fusion Hybrid. Together with its Mercury Milan Hybrid counterpart, it joins the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner (compact SUV) Hybrids to double both the size and volume of Ford Motor Co.'s hybrid lineup.

Among this next-generation system's key features are an ultra-efficient new 2.5-liter four-cylinder "Atkinson cycle" engine good for 155 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque mated to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, or "e-CVT." Intake Variable Cam Timing (iVCT), enable seamless transitions from gas to electric and vice-versa, while both spark and cam timing are varied according to engine load to optimize efficiency and emissions. Enhanced electronic throttle control reduces airflow on shutdowns, which reduces fuel need on restarts, and a "wide-band lambda sensor" analyzes air-fuel ratios and adjusts the lean/rich mixture to keep the system in balance and minimize emissions.

The new 275-volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is smaller, lighter and optimized to produce 20 percent more power. Cooled by cabin air, its improved chemistry allows it to run at higher temperatures, and an added variable voltage converter boosts voltage to the battery to operate the motor and generator more efficiently. A "smarter" climate control system with an electric air-conditioning compressor minimizes engine usage by running it only as needed for heating and cooling.

The brake system delivers full regenerative braking (when the drive motor becomes a generator), backed up by friction braking as needed, to capture nearly 94 percent of the energy normally lost through friction in braking and send it back to the battery. And, as we noticed during our drive, it delivers improved brake pedal feel compared to the previous system.

The hybrid system also allows the Fusion and Milan Hybrids to operate longer at higher speeds in electric mode than competitive systems. They can run up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately double the speed of some competitors. "Because our hybrid can run at a much higher speed in electric mode, you can do so much more in city-driving situations," says Ford Hybrid Applications Manager Gil Portalatin. "Under the right conditions, you can drive in your neighborhood or in mall parking lots without using a drop of gasoline." With the 41 city and 36 hwy ratings, Fusion and Milan Hybrids can achieve a driving range of over 700 miles on a single tank of gas.

It uses two high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens flanking the speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information. The approach is multi-layered: A tutorial mode helps drivers learn about its instruments and the system, while tech enthusiasts will enjoy detailed gauges that help them become more efficient. The system even "grows" vines and leaves on-screen to reward efficient driving.

Drivers can choose one of four data screens: The basic "Inform" screen displays fuel level and battery charge status; "Enlighten" adds an electric vehicle mode indicator and a tachometer; "Engage" adds engine output power and battery output power; and "Empower" adds power to wheels, EV power threshold and accessory power consumption. All levels can show instant fuel economy, fuel economy history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, transmission gear and trip data-fuel economy, time-elapsed fuel economy and miles to empty. There's even an engine coolant temperature indicator that turns green when the engine is warm enough to allow engine shut-off and restart for full EV operation.

I have to confess, I'm an addict. I can't get enough, and I'll go to any lengths to get my fix. Even if it means sneaking out under the pretense of getting a pint of milk, I'll risk it just for that unbeatable feeling, that rush that I just can't get from by any other means.

I'm hooked on convertibles. I don't know when it started, but it probably stems from my father's MG Midget. It's a wicked thing to do to a child, starting their dependency that young, and that sublime sports car was the path to stronger stuff. I've had a string of convertibles since I got my license, but now I think that I've found the one that I'm never going to be able to give up.

It's one of the most arresting vehicles that I've seen in a while, and every time I sit in it I feel like I'm riding on a wave of power. This is probably due to the engine being so close, and whilst the tiny bonnet can be initially daunting it's soon a feature that you grow to love.

I am of course referring to the new Mitsubishi Colt CZC, the cabriolet that has stolen my heart. Whether I'm off to work or popping out for mundane chores, the CZC brings an element of absolute enjoyment to every journey. It's a sad thing to live for the weekend, but the CZC makes it worthwhile because that's when I can cut loose and head out into the countryside for some roofless cruising.

It's not ideal for everyone, especially if you have a family and need a more practical model, but if you're looking for a car that's just a little bit frivolous and cheeky with it, then the new Mitsubishi Colt CZC could well be ideal for you. There's plenty of power for town or motorway driving, and as is to be expected from the Japanese camp the handling and engineering is sublime.

If you're looking to treat yourself and don't need to worry about size constraints, I would highly recommend the CZC. Just be careful, because whilst roofless driving is addictive, you might end up unprepared to give it up for more inclement weather.

What if you took two companies that had contrasting, unique strengths with cars and put them together to build a car emphasizing both of their traits? Well, that's exactly what happened in the 1970s when BMW and Lamborghini got together to build a legendary car - the BMW M1.

The BMW M1 was a car built in a soap opera environment of sorts. The problem wasn't BMW, but Lamborghini. BMW had retained the Italian exotic sports car company to design the M1. Alas, Lamborghini was having major financial problems at the time and ended up going bankrupt half way through the project. BMW was thus forced to take the car back and complete the project on its own.

These odd circumstances led to an odd car. The first M1s look more or less exactly like you might think they would if Lamborghini did half the work and then handed the car off to BMW and did not consult on the rest of the project. The car has some of the swooping designs you see with all Lamborghinis, but also some of the typical lines you see in BMW. Put together, the car looks something like...a DeLorean. To some, this is a beautiful design. To others, it is not.

The BMW M1 was sold to the public for only three years - 1978-81. The sales for this period totaled 456 cars, the smallest production line in the history of BMW. Oddly, the base engine was a 6 cylinder, with twin cams and produced a top speed in the 160 miles per hour range. Other BMW models were later given the M1 version, but they were just upgrades of the respective base production cars and not real M1s.

It must be said that the powers at BMW really liked the M1. They actually started a PRO M1 racing series that restricted teams to using just the M1 car. The series became a launching pad for Formula One drivers. The iconic Ferrari driver Niki Lauda won two PRO M1 championships and future F1 Champ Nelson Piquet won one. BMW still supports the series today although M1s long ago were phased out in exchange for 3 series cars.

Why write about a car nearly 30 years old? Well, BMW is considering updating the car and releasing a modern version. It is called the M1 Homage Concept. The car has only been seen once, but it just looks brutally wicked in a good way. The current economic environment has stopped BMW and other companies from pursuing such projects, but expect the car to get some attention when the economic situation improves. I honestly don't care for the original M1 design, but the Homage Concept looks like an absolutely beautiful and aggressive car design worth every penny of what will certainly be a very high price.

Last year, Mercedes introduced a new C-class Which is the nearest it has come to making a MW 3- series. The C-class has the spirit and driving dynamics that its predecessors lacked and even introduced different front-end styling to distinguish the most popular Sport versions. Surely, its bigger brother, the new model E-class, would follow the same pattern?

The answer is no. The new E class has many virtues, but sportiness isn't one of them. At least not for the first versions to go on sale; we can expect the E63 AMG, announced at the New York Auto Show in April and due to go on sale at the end of the year, to be the exception.

Mercedes bosses say that as the heart of the range, the E-class is too important to change fundamentally. They point out that in this market sector, Mercedes is dominant; it easily out-sells the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. So the ninth generation would develop by evolution, not revolution. It had to be a comfortable familiarity but below the surface incorporate a myriad of detail improvements and all the latest technology.

So W212 is lower, wider and more prominently wedge-shaped than its predecessor. That allows it to have the best aerodynamics in its class: a drag coefficient of 0.25 (most of its rivals are 0.28 or above) The imposing grille is still there - and the star still rises above it - but the four headlamps are angular rather than oval.

To meet European regulations for pedestrian safety, that low, wind-cheating bonnet has to be able to pop up 50mm in an accident; while others use complex pyrotechnics, Mercedes has an elegantly simple solution with steel springs.

The emphasis on aerodynamics is part of a program to improve fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions dictated by other EC regulations. For some reason, in Germany environmental measures that elsewhere are called 'green', turn blue.

Mercedes calls its eco-pack age BlueEfficiency. It includes more efficient engines, low rolling resistance tyres and energy-saving alternators, and fuel, air conditioning and power steering pumps that switch off when not required.

The four-cylinder petrol engines are downsized to 1.8 litres, have direct fuel injection and are turbocharged. The three four-cylinder CDI diesels - E200, E220 and E250 - all use the new 2.1-litre engine in different states of tune. The E350 CDI and E350 CGI have developments of the previous six-cylinder engines; the petrol CGI also has direct injection. The 5.5-litre V8 engine for the top model, the E500, is carried over from the old E-class; this is the only version not to have the additional BlueEfficiency features.

In Europe, more than half the market for this type of car is diesel, so I concentrated on the E250 CDI and E350 CDI. These engines develop respectively 204 and 231bhp. The 250 comes equipped with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission while the six-cylinder 350 has Mercedes' latest seven-speed automatic.

The four-cylinder diesel has a curious combination of characteristics. It is unusually smooth and quiet at idle but noisy when pushed hard. Although the 250 has two turbochargers in sequence to even out the power delivery, the performance is far from startling, and the automatic transmission does it no favours. In this respect, the seven-speed E350 CDI is much lively but our experience with the new Jaguar AJ-V6D (and the BMW 335d) suggests it is not the best of the latest crop of high performance diesels.

As before, the F-class is better to travel in than to drive. All models have adaptive shock absorbers that react to the driving situation and adjust to provide maximum ride comfort or cornering stability as required. The seats are improved, the air conditioning allows the choice of three different air volume and distribution modes and is arranged in three independent zones driver, front passenger and rear passengers - and there is more space inside thanks to the 2cm longer wheelbase and 3.5cm extra width. Mercedes aimed to make this car the most comfortable car in its class. I think it may have succeeded.

Mercedes has been in the fore front with most of the active safety systems that we now take for granted: ABS anti-lock braking, ASR traction control, ESP stability control. The new F-class moves this to a new level with a raft of 'assist' systems, all electronic and very clever and designed to see and react to the motoring hazards and mitigate their consequences. This car doesn't quite drive itself but you get the impression that it could... Where to start? Attention Assist is a good example of Mercedes-knows- best. This drowsiness detector is standard equipment on all E-class models. Sensors monitor 70 different parameters to pick up irregularities in driving behavior. If it detects a series of steering errors or other inconsistencies it concludes that the driver is sleepy and sounds a warning and a symbol representing a cup of tea appears on the instrument display to suggest that you take a break.

Brake Assist Plus is a radar- based system linked to the optional Distronic cruise control which provides the driver with optimum braking pressure when a collision is imminent and if no action is taken will apply the brakes automatically. Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera on the windscreen to follow lines in the road and when the car has moved out of a lane with out indicating, an electric motor in the steering wheel vibrates its rim as a warning. Blind Spot Assist provides a light warning of the presence of a car in the blind spot of the side mirror. Speed Limit Assist, recently available on a number of other cars, recognizes speed limit signs and displays the prevailing limit at the center of the speedometer.

Nightview Assist Plus uses an infrared camera to give a greyscale image on the dashboard screen to show hazards beyond the light range and highlight pedestrians. The new E-class takes vehicle lighting further forward, liter ally and technologically. Others have active headlamps that turn with steering or illuminate corners but Mercedes' optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist uses a windscreen camera to recognize oncoming traffic and adjust the headlamp beams accordingly. This is much more than automatic dip ping; it changes the shape of the dipped light beam to give the best possible road illumination from 65 to as much as 300 meters. It works beautifully.

Mercedes talks of all these systems making the car your 'intelligent partner'. My first reaction was 'too much stuff' but there is no doubt that they represent further advances in safety technology and of course you don't have to tick all the options boxes.

Natural gas cars are another option but probably not the best for most of us. Cars that run on natural gas are still relying on a limited natural resource but the cost is typically cheaper than gasoline.

There are limited cars available that run on natural gas but your decision to buy one will mostly be based on whether or not you can find a fueling station. For those living in California, you have the most access to natural gas stations.

Biodiesel
Biodiesel cars are more readily available than natural gas cars and are a good choice for those that live in year-round temperate climates. Why is temperature important? Because biodiesel fuel is based on vegetable oil and can solidify in cold temperatures.

The nice feature of biodiesel cars is that you can switch back and forth between biodiesel and diesel. Any diesel engine can run on biodiesel so you have a greater selection of eco friendly cars to choose from.

One of the downsides of biodiesel is that it still gives off harmful pollutants. Another is that you need to be near a biodiesel fueling station or be willing to fill up on McDonald's grease. Not exactly an attractive choice.

Hybrid
The most available eco friendly cars and the best choice for the majority of drivers are hybrid cars. These cars run on in part or in total on a battery that is fueled whenever your car brakes. These cars are the hottest craze right now which is driving up selection and driving down price.

My husband and I are currently looking at purchasing a hybrid Honda Civic. You do not need a special fueling station to benefit from this type of car. Hybrids use regular fuel in addition to the battery power. A car like the Prius relies more heavily on the battery than a car like the Civic.

If you are considering purchasing a hybrid you should do some homework. Vehicles such as SUV's can be quite pricey. You need to calculate the cost of purchase against the savings in gas and see how long it would take you to break even. It may be that the added cost for the hybrid cannot be reasonably recouped through the gas savings.

In the case of a sedan, you are more likely to come out ahead with the savings at the pump.

You may have a concern about the cost to replace the hybrid battery should it go bad. Again, do some research. In the case of the Civic, the replacement cost is about $500 and you can drive the car even if the battery is dead. A Prius is dead if the battery is dead and the battery is more costly to replace.

There is no shortcut around doing your own research. Hybrid cars are changing with each model year so the facts and figures are different from year to year.

In my opinion, the Hybrid car is the best eco friendly car option we have right now. Solar cars, electric cars and hydrogen cars are not realistic for mainstream drivers at this stage but hopefully the future we will see them come around.

What is conspicuous about the Element is the clever arrangement of doors. The clamshell rear doors are hinged at the back, and can thus open only when the front doors are open. The Element also provides the required driving comfort as the power delivery is smooth and efficient and its inline four cylinder engine, gives you no trouble when merging onto the freeway. With the five-speed manual transmission, the clutch is light and easy to apply. The truck-like positioning of the shift knob, sprouting from the middle of the center dash console, is friendly to use. The Element is also easy to park and has great visibility in all directions.

It has to be admitted that this is a car for everyday driving, but not cross-country highway trips. Even though the Element is ruggedly built, the manufacturer still needs to take care of certain areas. Even after driving the Element for hardly 5,000, the floor under the gas pedal was showing significant wear and a strong durable set of floor mats would help remedy that. The painted surfaces on the exterior of the Element and the composite surfaces need to be kept clean all the time to avoid discoloration and pitting.

In the ever so popular entry-level luxury car segment, the BMW 3-series is a huge seller, and the benchmark. Audi's A4 has been no sitting duck either though, selling a crazy number of units as well. So which one is really better?

Well, I wasn't big on Audis previously. I saw them as glorified Volkswagens, partly, because most of them are. No companies can be accused of platform sharing as much as VW and Audi. They use the same platform for the Jetta, Golf, GTI, Passat, Beetle, A4 and A6. They stretch it and shrink it as necessary, but it's essentially the same chassis. So you can understand why I would look at an A6 and say... I wonder if that guy knows he's driving an XL Jetta.

My opinion on Audis changed quite a bit after owning a VW GTI VR6. Even at more than 110,000 miles on the odometer, the GTI tracks straight and true, solid as ever. There's a certain solidity that all German cars have that is very addictive. It's not that they're actually better built - the reliability is actually shameful, and nothing compared to the appliance-like Japanese cars. However, the perception of the solidity is still appealing. And so Audis are appealing to drive, as I found. But so are higher-end Volkswagens, and they feel strangely similar. We'll have to look at a lot more to find out whether the Audi A4 is worth it.

In terms of driving dynamics, while the A4 is very, very good, the 3-series is downright excellent. Nothing compares to the rear-drive, 50-50 weight balance, great steering feel, engine sound and fun-to-drive nature of the 3-series for anywhere near its price. If that is the most important thing to you, your decision is clear.

Not everyone looks at driving dynamics alone though. Let's talk about styling. BMWs look good, but I consider Audis and their Bauhaus style to be at the very top of mainstream cars. It's also understood that Audi designs some of the best interiors in the business. Fit, finish, colour choice, everything is superb and looks top-notch, better than just about every competitor. If the styling and interior are most important to you, your decision is clear as well.

Since both cars are similarly sized, it comes down to value. The A4 is cheaper than the 3-series, especially in front-drive four-cylinder form, but if you're looking at the front-drive 4-cylinder A4, you should probably have a look at the Jetta too, which offers the same chassis, engine and transmission for a lot less. On the other hand, you can look at it as a cheap way of getting into an Audi (but you'll miss a lot of the experience). Thing is, when you look at a Quattro V6 A4, the prices are right in line with a 3-series, and the value proposition doesn't quite look the same when an A4 can go up twenty grand in price.

I'd say that on the lower end of the scale, the A4 is the better choice, and if you're going to spend more, go for the 3-series.

Audi's preparing the new V10 version of the R8, to start at a jaw-dropping $147,200. The R8 has received a lot of glowing reviews, which is to be expected from a very stylish, mid-engined German sports car based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform.

The R8 is supposed to be a comfortable, luxurious two-seater, a GT if you will, that can perform very well. It definitely achieves those targets, without a doubt, but it's an Audi. Priced in the neighbourhood of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins. You shouldn't have to tell people that it's a Gallardo under the skin or that it is mid-engined, they should just know what it's about when it's above a hundred grand.

As much as I like the R8, I think that it is grossly overpriced. Here's my logic. The V8 R8 is around $115 grand, give or take. Also very expensive. The engine it has is Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 from the RS4, producing 420 horsepower. I consider that engine equivalent to BMW's 4.0-liter V8 in the M3 with 420 horsepower, Lexus' 5-liter 420-hp V8 in the IS-F and Mercedes' similarly-powered, hand-built 6.3-liter AMG V8. All those cars are priced between fifty grand and seventy grand. So if you take an engine from cars in that price range, and combine it with a borrowed platform that is not specifically made for the car, that car should be priced more reasonable. I would say seventy to eighty grand.

Cars above a hundred grand are something else. You can't use borrowed platforms and engines in this price bracket; that's just absurd! That borrowed engine doesn't have the charm of Ferrari's legendary V8 in the F430 or the awesome staccato bark of the mighty V12 in the Aston Martins. Its just not right!

So apart from overpricing and a lack of character, charm and inspiration, is there anything else that I find wrong about the R8? Yes. Performance. Since your R8 doesn't have the prestige of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin, it must have something else, right? Luxury? Yes, but the Mercedes SL-class has that better covered. Reliability? No, the Japanese own the rights to that. Looks? Well yes, but any better than the Italians? No. So the performance must be stunning, right? That depends on what you're comparing it to.

It has the same acceleration times as the car it borrows its engine from, the RS4. Also the same as the Mercedes C63, BMW M3 and Lexus IS-F. If its performance you want, there's a little thing they call Godzilla. Yes, for seventy-three grand, it is more than an entire second faster to 60 than the R8 and pull more than 1 G on the skidpad. The GT-R is also reliable, being hand-built in Japan.

So overall, how does the R8 fare? Fail.

When I think of Ferrari, I think of one of the world's most desirable supercars with a thoroughbred pedigree that is almost peerless in the world of luxury sports cars. From Mg Midget to Porsche 911 Carrera Sport Targa to Renault Alpine, my sibling and I spent our younger years squished into seats (where more than one was available) that seemed far too close to the ground for my liking. But my word could those cars cut a dash. Whether on the motorway or country lanes, it was an education in power and handling.

Whilst I might hate real arachnids with a passion that borders on hysteria, there's nothing unlovable about the Ferrari F430 Spider. When a sports car loving friend decided that their most recent used Ferrari acquisition require breaking in, they proposed a weekend jaunt in the darkest reaches of Devon. I was initially sceptical, because looking at the F430 you wouldn't think that luggage was much of an option. And you'd be right. There's just about room for 2 medium sized bags in the admittedly handsome nose of the car, and you could probably squash some bits behind the seats, but overall it's advisable that you practise packing light if the Ferrari F430 Spider is going to be your transport mode of choice.

Having packed in the time-honoured frugal fashion of the frequent traveller (you'd be astonished at the diminutive size of the shoulder bag that I took for a week in Poland), I was alerted to my friend's arrival on Friday afternoon by the impressive vibrato of the Ferrari's engine a full two minutes before it hove into view at the end of my driveway.

Let me point out that we were travelling from York, a five and a half hour journey at the best of times, and one that could be the test of even the oldest friendship. Fortunately, we had something to divert us from any potential bickering over toilet stops or music choice. Because the used Ferrari dismissed any concerns about performance in the ten minutes between my house and Micklegate.

I won't bore you with the details of what two old lushes got up to in cider country (no, my friend does not answer to the name Withnail), but whilst the evenings were saved for sampling the local scrumpy, our days were devoted to the timeless novelty of feeling the wind in our hair as the glorious howls of the Spider echoed around the hills. And the thing is that I didn't feel any of the trepidation that I expected, because whilst it may have the appearance of an ethereal sprite, the F430 Spider grips the road with grim determination for a nearly unmatched driving experience.

The return journey was no less exhilarating, and it was almost with a sense of sadness that I waved goodbye as the fabulous used Ferrari took its leave. In fact, I'm not sure whether I was waving goodbye more to my friend or the car.

I have to confess to something. I'm a sucker for the old Land Rover series. So it's with more than a little suspicion that I approached my next potential Landy purchase, because the more modern Land Rovers do not look as if they would take so kindly to an amateur mechanic wandering into his garage wielding a spanner and a copy of the Haynes manual. As ever I wanted a used Land Rover, both for the lower price and feeling that it had already been broken in to some extent. As I have already experienced the delights of bouncing about on country lanes in a tatty old Defender I decided to opt for a test-drive in the updated version.

With the vast range of models and specs on offer it may be a little daunting to the first time buyer. However don't be overwhelmed by the choices, because visiting a good specialist used Land Rover dealership means that you will be able to talk through your requirements with experienced sales staff who can advise on the model that best suits your needs. This applies to any used vehicle, and a specialist dealership should be your first port of call to avoid disappointedly kicking the tyres of a rust bucket that looks nothing like the "good as new, one careful lady owner" car that you were expecting.

As I was only borrowing this particular used Land Rover Defender for a few hours, I thought it prudent to avoid any off-road adventures. Once either the Indy car or the S2000 smells the sweet spot of the torque band, their engines begin revving like crazy. At maximum acceleration, there's little point in putting your right hand back on the steering wheel between shifts of the S2000's six-speed transmission.

On dry public roads, it's difficult to get the S2000's sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE050s anywhere close to their limit. But a light rain prompted me to relive my Indy car experience. Like a knucklehead, I switched off the S2000's stability control and launched from a stop at an assertive 4,000 rpm. There was only a hint of wheelspin as the digital lines of the tachometer raced across the top of the dash. As the tach line turned red I pulled back on the precise, short-throw shifter without lifting fully off the gas. The rear tires lit up exactly like those on the Reynard-Honda when I was rough on the throttle. Fortunately, the S2000's Torsen limited-slip differential helped prevent the rear from stepping out.

I repeated this on the two-three upshift and was rewarded with a bit more wheelspin. The S2000 then told me the same thing as the CART car: "Be more gentle or you're going to make a fool of yourself." Having matured slightly over 14 years, I figured I didn't need to run the S2000 to the redline in third. In the rain. On a public road. Instead, I entered the upcoming off-camber left-hander a hair faster than was prudent. Okay, fast enough to earn chrome wrist jewelry from the police, and was rewarded by a slight and easily catchable tail slide. When the rear settled down, it required every bit of my scarce willpower to keep from going back to wide-open throttle. Old habits die hard.

With the new 2.2-liter engine, a best-time launch is accomplished at a more reasonable 4,500 rpm or so.
