Top Luxury Cars | 2011 Chevy Volt - From Show Car to Showroom

The 2007 Chevrolet Volt concept dazzled, even more than General Motors expected. For 2010 production, however, it has to use existing component sets, which naturally make the Volt more mainstream and cheaper to build. The changes also give the car lower drag, more cabin space, and a tighter turning circle. The designer of both vehicles, Bob Boniface, says that concept cars are "not a contract with the general public" and that the commercial product is a much better car. We tend to agree with him. Polarizing design can impress but lose sales. GM needs this car to succeed. So do we all.

From Concept to Production

1 The deeply inset grille and the sharp crease from the lower lamps were terrible for aerodynamics, and the recessed lamps were neither adequate for illumination nor legal.

2 Multiple hard surface-change lines on the front of the concept tended to confuse and retard oncoming air molecules. Smoothing the front end helps aerodynamically and simplifies production.

3 Saab 99-like, the tank-slit wraparound windshield was deemed likely to compete with plans for future Saab products. But GM may sell Saab anyway.

4 The sharp break from windshield to roof was likewise considered too Saab-like, and it was also aerodynamically undesirable, thus the change to uninterrupted flowing glass.

5 Big bulges for oversize - 21-inch - wheels were another drag-increasing styling element that had to go for the production car.

6 The grille shape was retained, but air flows into the engine compartment only through peripheral slots around the grille shield, which retains its diamond texture. Most air enters below the bumper.

7 Headlamps had to be bigger for adequate lighting, and wrapping them around the front end let side markers be incorporated.

8 The impossible-to-clean transparent fairings from the show car have been replaced by painted sheetmetal, which visually extends the height of the side glass.

9 These 17-inch wheels look much like the show car's 21-inch units, but in fact, they have been refined to reduce aerodynamic drag. Small details count when there's not much power available.

10 The continuous sweep of glass from windshield to roof is excellent for aerodynamic drag reduction, but it also gives the car a softer, safer appearance, desirable for a family car.

The 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Chevrolet introduced the 1970 Monte Carlo as an answer to the restyled 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix, and to compete with the Ford Thunderbird. Both cars were based on the mid-size GM A-Body platform, and rode on the aforementioned 116 inch wheelbase as the four-door Chevelle and the El Camino. The 1970 Monte Carlo was only acquirable as a two-door coupe, and it holds the distinction of having the longest hood ever installed on a Chevrolet! It was billed as a \"personal luxury\" car, or a \"gentleman's performance\" car.

The standard engine was a 250 HP 2-barrel version of the present small country 350 CID V8. It could be ordered with a 300 HP 4-barrel 350 small block, a 265 HP 2-barrel 400 CID small country V8, or a 330 HP 4-barrel 402 bounteous country V8 that Chevrolet for some think marketed as a 400. There was also a Monte Carlo SS version acquirable that came with a 360 HP version of Chevrolet's brand new bounteous country 454 V8 engine with a stiffer suspension, front round brakes, and some discreet badging. The SS-454 was a lively performer, with a zero to sixty time of 7.5 seconds. There were reportedly ten cars that year special ordered with the 450HP LS-6 454 engine. The small country equipped cars generally came with the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission, patch the bounteous country cars typically had the heavier-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400.

The base 1970 Monte Carlo weighed in at 3460 lbs, most 200 lbs. more than a comparably-equipped 2-door Chevelle with the shorter 112-inch wheelbase. Many Monte Carlos however, were equipped with more wealth options than the typical Chevelle, such as air conditioning (yes, in 1970, air conditioning was thoughtful a wealth option, unlike today!), power windows, and another items that increased the container weight. Fender skirts were also a favourite option.

There were somewhere between 130,000 and 146,000 Monte Carlos produced in 1970, depending on what inventiveness you reference. Only 3,823 of those had the SS-454 package, and those cars are highly sought after today by enthusiasts. The early cars (1970-1972) have an active following, with several clubs and online forums sacred to them. Since it mutual the aforementioned platform as the Chevelle, some aftermarket high-performance parts that were designed for the Chevelle will sound the Monte Carlo. Even though it was marketed primarily on the basis of luxury, it became a favourite model for have automobile racing. Several bounteous names in NASCAR crowd Monte Carlos, such as Bobby Allison and Neil Bonnett.

The 1970 Monte Carlo succeeded very well in its original purpose: to compete with the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Ford Thunderbird. There were more 1970 Monte Carlos oversubscribed than the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Ford Thunderbird combined! The sculpted body, long front fenders and offense \"Coke Bottle\" appearance made it a muscular-looking, classy car, and to me it is much better looking than the Chevelle. It is digit of my favorite embody styles; I just desire they had made a 9/10 size version of the car!

The 1955 Chevrolet

In the early 1950's, every major auto manufacturer was striving to best the competition by introducing a state-of-the-art automobile with all-new styling and a more advanced engine. Meanwhile, Chevrolet seemed to be stuck in a rut; every Chevy from 1929 to 1954 had the same six-cylinder engine under the hood. Chevrolet was losing its edge as a sporty yet affordable car manufacturer, but the tides would change with the 1955 Chevrolet.

The 1955 Chevrolet represented a shift in style and function. The new 265 cubic inch V-8 engine was probably the biggest cause of the popularity of the 1955 Chevrolet, and the option of the "Turbo-Fire" V-8 offered a little extra for auto enthusiasts, with between 162 and 180 horsepower. This small-block V-8 was the first V-8 engine in a Chevrolet since 1918.

The '55 Chevy was the first Chevrolet to feature "Motoramic" styling. Underneath this now-classic styling sat a new frame, 3 new engine types, new brakes, and a new suspension. Compared to earlier Chevrolets, the 1955 Chevy was both lighter and stiffer, with "glide ride" front suspension offering a smooth ride. As General Motors' biggest seller, the Chevrolet name was carefully styled ahead of the release of the all-new 1955 design. The eye-catching design was boxy, yet sleeker and more futuristic than the 1953 and 1954 models. The new model was designed to appear longer, lower, and wider than the older model. Nicknamed the "shoebox" design, the 1955 model was the first Chevy to have streamlined rear fenders. Interior innovations included plush upholstery and a fan-shaped instrument cluster, with an optional radio. With a stylish wrap-around windshield, tail fins, and chrome detailing, the 1955 Chevrolet soon became popular with auto enthusiasts as well as everyday drivers.

The 1955 model year included three Chevrolet models: The Bel Air, the 150, and the 210. Available versions included 2-door and 4-door sedans, station wagons, and the sought-after convertible. 14 different solid color options were available for the 1955 Chevy, although most 1955 Chevrolets were sold with one of 23 popular two-tone color combinations.

The best-selling car in 1955, over 1,700,000 Chevrolets were produced that year. As a testament to its popularity, a '55 Chevy was chosen as the official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1955. While in 1954 Ford had dominated the market by selling 47 percent of all low-priced automobiles, the 1955 Chevy was a smashing success, exceeding Chevrolet's sales record for any previous year. In fact, the 50 millionth GM automobile produced in the United States was a 1955 Chevy Bel Air.

The popularity of the 1955 Chevrolet is thanks to its completely transformed look. With better performance and a shiny new look, the '55 Chevy soon won over the hearts of America. The design introduced in the 1955 Chevrolet existed with minor alterations until the 1958 model year. The 1955 Chevy remains a popular choice more than fifty years after its introduction for car enthusiasts who lovingly restore the cars to their original condition or add modifications according to their personal tastes.

The 1987 Chevrolet Blazer

In 1991, Alex Hardy, 37, was driving his 1987 Chevrolet Blazer through White Hall, Alabama when the Blazer's rear axle broke, freeing the right wheel assembly and sending the vehicle into a roll. When the door flew open, Hardy was thrown 30 to 40 feet through the air and suffered severe injuries that left him permanently paralyzed.

Attorneys representing Hardy filed suit against General Motors. They alleged that the Blazer's faulty door latches contributed to Hardy's injuries, and that GM knowingly sold Blazers with defective door latches that opened in accidents like the one owned by Hardy.

GM denied the allegations, arguing Hardy was to blame because he had been drinking and fell asleep when his Blazer rolled over. Witnesses for GM testified that Hardy flew through a window because he was not wearing a seat belt. GM insisted that their "Type 3" door latch was safe and met all federal safety standards. They further claimed that the rate of side-door ejections from its vehicles involved in fatal accidents was .77 per 100 occupants. Finally, GM experts testified that Hardy's door latch was only slightly damaged, indicating that it had not come open during the accident as he contended.

"Once again, a giant automaker tried to avoid the facts by clouding the issue," noted nationally recognized auto defects attorney, John Bisnar. "Internal GM documents-including a 1982 study estimating such latches could fail some 18,000 times a year-underscored the faulty nature of GM's Type 3 door latch. This latch was installed on some 40 million GM vehicles beginning in 1978. An updated version featuring a support plate was only installed on some 1987 models. Unfortunately, GM opted not to spend the estimated $916 million needed to replace all of the latches. It chose instead to issue a 'quiet recall' where dealers were instructed to replace the latch without telling their customers. Regrettably, there are still some 30 million vehicles on the road that are equipped with these latches."

An Alabama jury awarded $50 million in compensatory damages for Mr. Hardy and his family and $100 million in punitive damages against the automaker for what the jury determined was GM's "guilty knowledge" of the defective latches. This was one of the largest ever verdicts against GM.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into what GM knew about the apparent defects in the door latches. A former administrator of the Federal agency said it often took aggressive civil litigation like the Hardy case to unearth evidence and documents that were otherwise hidden from Federal regulators.

"This verdict revealed the reprehensible fact that GM had known for at least 14 years that Americans would be injured and killed as a result of its poorly designed door latch, a part that had failed in accident after accident," observed Brian Chase of the nationally recognized auto defects law firm of Bisnar Chase. "Mr. Hardy's action in taking GM to court is an example of our justice system at work. The jury award is America's message to GM-in this case, quite a substantial message-that their failure to act was not acceptable. Hopefully, this lawsuit will help convince the automaker to respond effectively to known safety defects to prevent further injuries to its customers."

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

There are just a handful of classic cars that just about anyone will immediately recognize and the 1957 Chevy Bel Air is one of them. From the classic tail fins to the hooded headlights this model is as much an American icon as parades and apple pie. While the term '57 Chevy has come to be used as a catchall phrase for that model year, as though there were just one model, there were actually several different variations of note. It's interesting to consider that the boys at Chevy wanted to see a totally new design for the 1957 model year. Production problems and setbacks caused them to use the 1955 model design as a base one more time. Imagine how close we were to never seeing this model!

The 1957 Chevrolet came in three different main trim packages. The Bel Air was the top of the line luxury package featuring gold anodized trim pieces on the front grill, fenders, hood and trunk lid. The 210 package was a mid-line offering with the 150 package rounding out the line as a base offering. There were several body styles available for the 1957 model year, most of which had an option of the Bel Air trim package. The standard Chevy two and four door sedans were offered as well as a two door and four door Hardtop. Often confused by novice observers are the Sedans and Hardtop or Sport Coupes. The sedan model is easy to spot when you understand that model has upright pillars between the windows while the Hardtop or Sport Coupe does not. Also produced was what they called a Utility Coupe which featured a bench in the back rather than a regular seat for salesmen who needed to carry samples and deliver items. Station wagons were also popular at the time and Chevy offered two variations in '57. The Nomad was the high end version with a Bel Air trim package while the Handyman was offered in the 150 and 210 packages. And we can't forget the famous Chevy Convertible from this year!

On top of the many body style variations from this year a ton of different options were available. Air Conditioning and Fuel Injection are perhaps the most notable two of them all however very few were sold. Air conditioning was still considered an unnecessary luxury by most and Fuel Injection was so new that most garages simply did not know how to fix the system. Most 1957 Chevy buyers that year opted for the tried and true carburetor. Other items offered included a "Surround Sound" system for the radio (which consisted of a speaker in the rear of the car), power radio antenna, power brakes and a padded dashboard. This was the same year the ill fated Turboglide transmission was introduced. Unfortunately this tranny had a bad reputation from the start and the vast majority of buyers avoided it. The Turboglide ceased production less than 4 years later

While we think of this car as perhaps the most famous in American history the buying public at the time was not equally impressed. While sales are decent they fell short of expectations. In fact the Ford Motor Company out sold Chevy that year for the first time in over 20 years. Following an interesting trend in classic car market however, the 1957 Chevy remains one of the most sought after models for car collectors the world over.

Due to its popularity this model has been a favorite for charity fund raisers. Bill runs OldCarRaffle.com and HarleyDavidsonRaffles.com. Stop by and take a look. You will be amazed at the beautiful cars and bikes on there! Thanks for reading and have a great day.

The Chevrolet of the 21st Century

Chevrolet has had several popular cars on the market earning strong sales in the past few years. Specifically, Chevrolet is a well-rounded company whose top sellers reflect a diversity of good automobile design. For example, three of the Chevrolet's best seller in recent years include a pickup truck, a full-size family sedan, and a sporty little compact car--the Chevy Silverado, the Chevy Impala, and the Chevy Cobalt, respectively.

Chevrolet's most popular half-ton pickup truck, the Silverado, is second only to the Ford F Series in sales and popularity. Long known for its reliability and durability, the Chevy Silverado offers strong power and performance, a smooth, quiet ride, and a high degree of customization. With three cab styles, four engines, and trim levels ranging from the no-frills work truck to a luxury model, the Chevy Silverado can server as either a solid work truck, a sporty off-road adventurer, or a family hauler. The downsides are few and far between, but there are some. The four-speed automatic transmission is a little fussy when downshifting. Chevrolet has long been known poor cabin interior quality, and the Silverado is no exception. The Chevy Silverado interior is known for an over-abundance of hard plastic, uneven panel gas, and an awkward or uncomfortable ergonomic design (although most of these interior issues were addressed starting with the 2007 model). Overall, the Chevy Silverado is a solid, reliable, flexible vehicle whose ability to be tailored to the specific needs of its buyers and won it a popular place in the pickup market.

Finally, the Chevy Impala continues to be a popular seller. The Chevy Impala has a long and distinguished history going back fifty years, and continues to be Chevrolet's mainstay full-size sedan. Clearly, however, it has gone through some changes since 1958. Today's Chevy Impala has a small, more efficient V6 engine that provides plenty of power and performance while still offering decent gas mileage (traditionally a weak point of the classic Impalas). Although it provides sporty performance, the Chevy Impala remains essentially a family vehicle for those reluctant to buy a minivan. With a front bench seat, the Chevy Impala can fit up to six passengers. On the downside, although the Chevy Impala provides a smooth, comfortable ride, the handling is far from the best on the market. Overall, the modern Chevy Impala continues its long tradition of being an affordable, quality family vehicle that are still fun to drive.

The Chevy Cobalt first entered the market in 2005, as both a successor and improvement upon the Chevy Cavalier. Lager, higher quality, and fuel-efficient, the Chevy Cobalt sold well and quickly climbed its way onto the Top Ten Bestselling Cars list. Unlike foreign, imported compact cars, the Chevy Cobalt is highly customizable. Customers can choose form four trim levels, three engines, and two transmissions, and is available as either a coupe or a sedan. At 34 miles per gallon (55 kpg) on the highway, it gets great gas mileage. On the down side, although the Chevy Cobalt earned very good safety marks for frontal and read crash tests, many of its safety features are not standard. Antilock Brake Systems, rear disc brakes, and side curtain air bags are all optional on the lower trim levels (although side curtain airbags became standard in 2008). Overall, the Chevy Cobalt proves that American car manufacturers can still go toe-to-toe with foreign competitors in the compact car market.
